Fluctuations of steps on crystal surfaces

چکیده

Fluctuations of isolated and pairs of ascending steps of monoatomic height are studied in the framework of SOS models, using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. Below the roughening transistion of the surface, the profiles of long steps show the same scaling features for terrace and surface diffusion. For a pair of short steps, their separation distance is found to grow as t at late stages. Above roughening, simulational data on surface diffusion agree well with the classical continuum theory of Mullins.

Stability and kinetics of step motion on crystal surfaces.

The kinetics of monoatomic steps in diffusion-controlled crystal growth and evaporation processes are investigated analytically using a Green’s function approach. Integro-differential equations of motion for the steps are derived; and a systematic linear stability analysis is carried out treating simultaneously perturbations both along and perpendicular to the steps. Morphological fluctuations ...

Nonlinear dynamics of surface steps

Surface steps are key elements in the dynamics of a crystal surface below its thermodynamic roughening transition, because they constitute long-lived structural defects which are nevertheless highly mobile and prone to strong fluctuations [1]. The description of surface morphology evolution in terms of the thermodynamics and kinetics of steps goes back at least half a century [2]. During the pa...

Step roughness on Ag ( 111 ) investigated by STM : a systematic study of tip influence

We have investigated monatomic steps on Ag( 111) by STM at different temperatures. At room temperature, the rough appearance of these steps is usually attributed to thermal step fluctuations. We have investigated the influence of the tip systematically. Applying a new test, we demonstrate that even subtle influences can lead to wrong results in statistical analysis. Keywod: Low index single cry...

Step-position distributions and the pairwise Einstein model for steps on crystal surfaces

The pairwise Einstein model of steps not only justifies the use of the generalized Wigner distribution GWD for terrace width distributions TWDs , it also predicts a specific form for the step position distribution SPD , i.e., the probability density function for the fluctuations of a step about its average position. The predicted form of the SPD is well approximated by a Gaussian with a finite ...
